I'm still around (sparcdr) if you want to chat, it's just the time zone difference is hard. I still talk to Michael who responded above on occasion, but there's only a 4 hour window for real-time collaboration, sleep patterns permitting.

The problem with e-mail is clearly the speed of getting a response on a small if not noticeable detail, option, etcetera. But nonetheless you can see my e-mail as you are the blog owner, so if you want to talk, then use that.

People need to be open minded and compromise on communication methods, which is why I offer a personally managed XMPP server but with much more resources than you'd get hosting it on a residential line. Cloud computing is one thing out there that is actually worth its clamor.

Bottom line is, you can't trust Facebook, Microsoft, Myspace, or your own government, regardless of country, no less can you depend on the privacy of your communications, so within reason it's a good outcome where people can with a small bit of money either wholly provided or subsidized by a group of friends to just simply host their own content, as it is secure, fast, and not much if at all at the mercy of bureaucratic hypocrisy.

Anyways, I chomped at the bit as much as you did about simple topics. I still use Facebook but don't accept nor bother with requests, and seldom do I personally contribute anything to it, no less check it any sooner than 3 days between.

Great article, I'm a very open person when it comes to my information which is some what of a bad thing, but these issues still remain. My information is allowed to be tossed around by the big Facebook giant, no matter what I think.

I think we need to address these issues in "Web 3.0" by making applications more open, with APIs and transports to allow passing of generic information over a common form to multiple destinations. Similar to the way OpenID works, a calendar appointment can be distributed to multiple destination points based on a URI or address. This would allow people to host or choose different providers to hold there personal internet information. Bigpond would be able to provide you with it's own service, which you may choose is more trust worthy than Facebook, or has more access control compared to another site. If you are very paranoid you could host the service your self.

As soon as we create standardized transports and protocols for distribution of information in a generic form with relationship information a whole world of opportunities open up. Decentralization is the way forward, and I believe that's what Web 3.0 will/should be.
